ふう… 。きのう夕方、町の図書館から電話があり、リクエストしていた3件のうち2件、1件は本が届いたとのこと、もう1件は遠方の図書館での複写依頼など手続きの件。きょう出向いて、1件の1冊を借用し、もう１件はのちに手続き等することにして帰宅。借りた1冊をざっと見る。その著者、いつまでも倒錯したナショナル・アーケオロジストだな、と思いつつ、そこに載っていた文献に注意が向く。ネットで検索すると北見の図書館にあるとのこと。午後、片道50キロ、車走らせて閲覧にゆく。大丈夫、私が書いた閾値を超えていなかった。そして書ける話題を想い起こし、ステレオタイプのナラティヴにも想到する。稔りある8月9日。

Japan is back.
Tokyo now sells its military buildup as “prosperity + security.” The script isn’t new. In the 1930s, Finance Minister Takahashi Korekiyo used deficit-financed spending—including a major arms component—to pull Japan out of the Great Depression.

It worked, briefly, and the country got hooked. The bill? Military spending rose from roughly 4% of GNP in the early 1930s to around 80% by 1944. Takahashi, who tried to apply the brakes, was assassinated by his own military. The war ended under two atomic clouds.

The same country that invaded China and much of Asia in WWII—35 million Chinese casualties, Unit 731 experiments, “comfort women”—still refuses to fully confront its past. It now claims “a Taiwan contingency is a Japan contingency,” shifts from “defense” to offense, all under a “China threat” pretext.

Convenient. Whether this is genuine prosperity or the old path rebooted, East Asians know the difference.

Depuis la guerre de six jours, gagnée par Israël grâce à la trahison de Hassan II, et plus fortement depuis les accords d’Abraham, la monarchie marocaine est la première alliée arabe d’Israël. Les programmes d’entraînement secret, de livraisons d’armes massifs, d’espionnage (Pegasus), l’infiltration grossière du Makhzen facilitée par la compromission de M6 et sa vulnérabilité sur la vie privée ont amené à l’alignement pitoyable actuel et l’acceptation de ces jeux de dupes, quelques jours après l’offrande d’une autoroute à Donald Trump, des chaleureux échanges publics avec les autorités israéliennes, et de la mise en œuvre d’une stratégie partagée concernant l’instrumentalisation de Ceuta et Melilla, via notamment le fils Netanhyahou, en coordination avec Vox (qui a cessé toute critique sur le Maroc depuis quelques mois, après en avoir longtemps fait sa cible préférée, en préparation de ces événements) pour tenter de faire tomber le seul gouvernement européen attaché au droit international et ferme opposant en conséquence des délires ethnoimperialistes de Tel Aviv et de Washington, allant de Gaza à l’Iran.

La récupération immédiate par l’axe collaborationniste européen (Knafo et Bardella reçus il y a quelques semaines chaleureusement par Charles Kushner à Paris ; Méloni et le Danemark) était censée faire le reste, en prenant appui sur la lâcheté et la compromission habituelle des centristes libéraux, et l’ignorance et la bêtise d’une gauche morale pseudodécoloniale complètement compromise et déphasée, en fin de course et prise au piège de ses contradictions.

La manœuvre de Vance, Netanyahou, Smotrich et le Makhzen n’a échoué in extremis que grâce à l’intelligence de Pedro Sanchez dans la gestion de la crise, le point aveugle juridique non-anticipé (contrôles intérieurs à l’espace Schengen à la sortie de Ceuta) mais surtout du fait de la prise de vitesse par les réseaux sociaux de l’opération, qui avait laissé trop de trace forensiques, forçant à une rapide rétractation.

Cet épisode restera longtemps comme une tâche honteuse dans l’histoire du Maroc et pour tous ceux qui se sont plongés la tête la première dans l’exploitation opportuniste de cet événement.

Elle montre à quel point nos dirigeants et notre classe politique sont aisément manipulables et en réalité incapacitées à gouverner.

🇻🇪🇺🇸 TIME cover story exposes how Washington effectively runs Venezuela through acting president Delcy Rodríguez, a former Chavista loyalist turned Trump/Rubio proxy.

TIME's Eric Cortellessa sat down with Rodríguez, who took power after a US Delta Force raid kidnapped Nicolás Maduro from his residence in January and flew him to New York to face "drug charges." He's now sitting in a federal jail while Rodríguez, his former vice president, runs the country under what former US ambassador James Story bluntly calls "the Rodrígato": a government that stays in power while carrying out Washington's orders.

The arrangement, per the report: Secretary of State Marco Rubio personally oversees Venezuela's oil revenue and public finances through what amounts to a US-controlled escrow account. Washington collects most of Venezuela's oil export proceeds and releases funds back only as Caracas meets conditions set by the State Department. Rodríguez even consults Rubio on domestic appointments, including her Defense Minister. The two are reportedly in near-daily contact by phone and WhatsApp.

In exchange, Rodríguez gets to keep her seat, American oil majors (ExxonMobil, ConocoPhillips, Halliburton) get back into Venezuela's energy sector, and Washington gets a foothold it's wanted for decades.

Notably, Rodríguez tells TIME elections will happen only "when it is ready," and dodges repeatedly on whether opposition leader María Corina Machado would ever be allowed to run.

昨日ある投稿を目にして以来、Anthropic社が数百万冊もの古書を購入し、廃棄処分にしていた件について詳しく調べてみました。

同社は、自社のAIモデル「Claude」を学習させるために、多額の費用（数千万ドル）を投じて書籍を買い集め、それらを廃棄しました。

彼らは当初から、この行為が反感を買うものであると理解していました。自分たちがやっていることは間違っていると分かっていたのです。

2024年の社内メモには、次のように記されていました。

「『プロジェクト・パナマ（Project Panama）』とは、世界中のあらゆる書籍を破壊的にスキャンしようとする我々の取り組みである」

「我々がこれに取り組んでいることは、公にされたくない」

なぜ「古書」だったのでしょうか？

AnthropicやMetaのような企業にとって、著者や出版社から作品利用の許諾を得ることは非現実的だと判断されたからです。

そこで彼らは、古書の大量購入やインターネット上での海賊版入手という手段で作品を「盗用」し、自社製品の学習に利用したのです。

作品の著者たちは、その労力に対して一銭も受け取っていません。これらの企業は、他者が苦労して築き上げた文学的才能を盗み取り、その被害者である著者たちに取って代わる機械を学習させていたのです。

Anthropicの共同創業者であるベン・マン（Ben Mann）氏は、この目的のために、書籍の海賊版サイトである「LibGen」から自ら無数の書籍をダウンロードしていました。

2022年に新たな書籍海賊版サイトが登場した際、マン氏は従業員にそのリンクを共有し、「まさにグッドタイミングだ！！！」とメールを送っています。

Anthropicは、「Better World Books」や英国の「World of Books」といった業者から、数万冊単位で合計数百万冊もの古書を購入しました。

そして、スキャンを行う前に「油圧式裁断機」を使って書籍の背表紙を切り落としていました。最終的に、裁断された残りの部分はリサイクルに回されました。

After seeing a post on it yesterday, I’ve looked more deeply into Anthropic’s purchasing and destruction of millions of used books.

They spent tens of millions of dollars acquiring and destroying books to train their AI model, Claude.

They knew, from the beginning that it would be unpopular. They knew what they were doing, was wrong.

An internal memo from 2024 stated:

“Project Panama is our effort to destructively scan all the books in the world.”

“We don’t want it to be known that we are working on this.”

Why used books?

Companies like Anthropic and Meta found it impractical to gain permission from authors and publishers to use their work.

So instead, they stole their work to train their product through mass purchases of used books and through pirating them from the internet.

The authors of these works, didn’t receive a dime for their efforts. These companies stole the hard won literary talent of others to train machines to replace the victims of their theft.

Anthropic cofounder Ben Mann personally downloaded countless books for this purpose from LibGen, a book pirating website.

When a new book piracy website debuted in 2022, Mann sent an email sharing the link with his employees stating: “just in time!!!”

Meta employees were wary about the piracy of books, with one engineer writing, “Torrenting from a corporate laptop doesn’t feel right.”

Anthropic purchased millions of books, in batches of tens of thousands from Better World Books and U.K.-based World of Books.

They then used a “hydraulic powered cutting machine” to slice off the spines of these books before scanning them. Finally, the remains of these books were picked up for recycling.

Feel free to use AI, it’s a free country.

But remember that, if you use Claude, that Anthropic has committed a great wrong, and they knew that they were doing it from the beginning.

Kozo Okamoto, the Japanese Red Army fighter who joined the PFLP, died on 23 July in Beirut at 78.

Known as "Ahmad the Japanese," he was Lebanon's only recognized political refugee.

Japan demanded his extradition until the end. Beirut never gave him up.

Resistance fighter Kozo Okamoto passes away in Beirut's Dahiye at 78

Kozo Okamoto, a veteran resistance fighter who participated in a joint 1972 Lod Airport operation in Tel Aviv alongside the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, has passed away in Beirut at the age of 78 following a prolonged illness.

Named in vengeance for the 1948 Deir Yassin massacre carried out by Zionist death squads, the 1972 operation was planned by tactician Dr. Wadie Haddad as part of the global revolution against imperialism. Okamoto spent thirteen years in solitary confinement and twelve years total in Israeli detention before being freed in a 1985 prisoner exchange.

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine confirmed his passing, honoring his decades-long commitment and sacrifices on behalf of the Palestinian liberation struggle after settling in Lebanon following his release from an Israeli prison.

The PFLP said in a statement that Okamoto's life was "marked by immense sacrifices spanning for decades on the battlefields of struggle in support of the Palestinian cause."

Okamoto spent twelve years detained in Israel for his role in the operation before being freed in a 1985 prisoner exchange. Remaining steadfast in his political principles throughout his life in exile, he stayed under the protection of Palestinian factions in the Lebanese capital where he was affectionately known by comrades as Ahmad the Japanese.
