On This Day in Metal June 17th, 1997
Chaos erupted at Ozzfest when Ozzy Osbourne unexpectedly missed his scheduled appearance, leaving thousands of fans disappointed and frustrated. Tensions boiled over as crowd unrest broke out, creating one of the most infamous moments in Ozzfest history.
As the crowd exited, at least three brush fires were reportedly set on Polaris Amphitheater property. Box office windows were smashed, objects were thrown at employees, fences were torn down, neighboring property was damaged, and at least one vehicle in the parking lot suffered heavy damage.
Despite the controversy, Ozzfest would go on to become one of heavy metal’s most legendary touring festivals, helping launch and elevate countless bands for years to come.
