I Would Not Say the Shahada

When I came to Christ, I hid it. Only a handful of people I trusted knew.
Then a cousin I trusted sold me.
They went to my mother first. She cried from shame. She thought they were lying, jealous, she said, because I was doing well at school. She wanted to prove them wrong.
They gathered at my aunt’s house. Family gatherings were normal. I walked in thinking it was just another day.
The air was wrong. Every face in the room was on me.
“Are you still a Muslim or did you become a Nasrani?”
I laughed. Tried to turn it into a joke. It died in the room.
My mother was holding back tears. “Just say the Shahada. Prove them wrong.”
A few seconds. They felt like a year. On one side: my mother’s face. On the other: the truth.
I chose the truth.
“Mom, I can’t.”
Then the room broke.
See? We told you.
Yelling. Spitting.
Go to those Christians. Let them feed you.
You are a shame to your father.
My mother sobbing.
I went numb. The noise fell behind me like a film I was no longer in. I walked out with nowhere to go. The world I knew had collapsed, not because I had become a criminal, but because I had left Islam.
That is what apostasy is in that world. Not a change of mind. A public execution of your name. In some places a physical execution as well, thankfully mine was not the case.
Leaving Islam is a rebirth. You get your lungs back. You get your mind back. You get your humanity back.
If I had said the Shahada that day, I would have bought peace with a lie. I would have stayed a slave to the crowd, safe, loved, and dead inside.
I remembered the words of Jesus:
“What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his soul?”
I lost the room.
I kept myself.

My both kidneys failed at 31.

I went through Dialysis three times a week. I was dying slowly.

They put me on the transplant list and said I might not last. One night after dialysis I could not stand the pain. I shouted to God until I had no voice left:

The next test before transplant showed my kidneys working again.

No dialysis since. It's been four years and they still work.

The specialist said he had never seen such a thing.

I gave the rest of my life to God.
