@9mmsmg First date with my wife and I put on a song that I remember sitting in my moms car listening to for like “top 100 songs of the year” when I was in middle school and my wife said “oh you like old music” and I about crashed
@QuetzalPhoenix Same deal with children safety. The amount of shit I have heard is ABSOLUTELY A NO NO for children is like 8 miles long because idiots will give their kids a gallon of candy
@ThomBrady5 I have said since I was a young guy that America is really in third gear, what we need is a real struggle for dominance instead of a slap fight to go to fourth
@YIMBYLAND Especially if they were deep garages to where you can treat the whole first floor as storage or something, that’s a huge component of small homes people overlook is ways to add inexpensive storage
Imagine it's the 1940s. You're a carpenter. Power tools are beginning to replace hand tools for ordinary work. Furthermore, jobs that would have been impossible or ruinously expensive are suddenly within reach.
You show up at a worksite one fine morning and it's being picketed. STOP POWER TOOLS! the signs say. WOODWORKING UNDER THREAT!
Puzzled, you accost one of the demonstrators and ask him why he has a signboard in his hand rather than tools.
"Power tools are a menace!" he says. "How are you going to train apprentices if they can't feel the wood through their hands?"
"What happens when we can chew through aged quality timber faster than we can grow new trees?"
"Carpentry isn't just a set of skills and habits, it's a mindset. It won't be any true carpenters left if we let this go on."
You inquire further and discover that they have plans. Plans to exclude from any job they work on any craftsman who has ever used a power tool or even spoken approvingly about them.
Meanwhile, inside the picket line, a house is going up. Men are working. Cutting and joining the framing is going faster than you could have imagined 10 years ago.
You look at the workers. You look at the demonstrators. One group is talking. The other is getting stuff done. One group looks like the past, the other like the future. In this moment, you get to decide which group you're going to join.
This post was not about carpentry.
@bobbyfijan Public safety improvements and degenerate “resident” removal is half the solution, lot of places with abundant jobs have terrible areas of town that are affordable that are just straight up unsafe for families. Austin Texas public spaces are in danger of being overrun it seems
@bobbyfijan Exactly. Would you rather your kids be attended to by their actual parent, albeit a zoned out one, or just a zoned out person of uncertain provenance who has multiple other charges? Insane it’s even a conversation.
@austintexaslisa@YIMBYLAND I will vote for whoever will throw them into a wood chipper idgaf about their struggles, I’m not voting a city another dollar until they deal with the degenerates
@bigangrylaw in Texas, is there any felony/jail-time crime being committed if a citizen were to bear spray people doing this if they were doing it in your space/“at you”, around you? Is it treated much the same as simple assault or is it some kind of mutual combat/self defense?
@bigangrylaw It’s definitely cultural suicide. It is insane how few police I see around the city. I imagine it was significantly better 30 years ago, especially just keeping them in check.
My platform
Put antisocial people like repeat criminals, drug addicts and vandals in a big machine that turns them into industrial lubricant. Something has to be done that isn’t this self destructive, enabling, unsafe compassion
@fracdigital@bigangrylaw Not like the conservative platform is “put them in a big machine that turns them into useful grease” or something that deals with the problem. These “people” are not trying to and will never fit in society, just jail or a casket
