Sales are done for many other reasons other than competing with physical retail.
Each publisher has quarterly earnings to meet, and promotions help them meet their financial goals.
Also, games have pricing lifecycles, at some point publishers have saturated the audience willing to buy at full price. Promotions allow more price sensitive customers to buy the games and immerse themselves in the publisher’s IPs, which they obviously want to grow their IPs.
Also, company’s want positive year-over-year sales comps. If a major promotion is held in summer 2026, but then skipped in summer 2027, the 2027 comps will likely be negative. So to keep positive comps they’ll continue running promotions.
Additionally, PlayStation is still in competition with Xbox, Steam and Nintendo, these promotions are a way to grab dollars that would otherwise go to competitors, and convert customers not on PlayStation over to the brand.
Furthermore, customers tend to purchase a few games when there are deep discounts, so if a customer buys say 3-4 game that will translate into 100s of hours of game time on PlayStation and therefore promotions are great at customer rentention and engagement. And this is important because if I customer fires up their PlayStation console daily that more chances they’ll buy DLC, MTX or see another game they want to buy. It’s the flywheel effect.
There are other reasons too why sales will continue in an all-digital future, but these are some of the bigger ones.
Yup cause totally ignore a shit ton of indies rely on digital and this pointless boycott of something is coming no matter what cost them the people who need sale the most is more important.
Notice how none of the other big companies or publishers have commented on Sony's announcement to end physical disc production? No gotcha moments from Xbox or Nintendo, no declarations of solidarity with fans from Ubisoft or EA.
That's because everyone wants to go digital, and they're more than happy for Sony to take the fall and be the bad guy in their place.
However, I think if we're honest, we can't exactly blame anyone for wanting an all digital future. That, in and of itself, is not bad. It is considerably cheaper and it caters to the prevailing interests of most consumers. It's kind of a no-brainer for these companies.
So what's the real problem?
The current digital infrastructure is unreliable and the concept of ownership versus the purchase of a license hasn't been sufficiently modernized. Simply put, it's just too soon and too easy to manipulate in unfair ways. Besides that, I don't see why fans can't continue to have physical discs in some capacity as long as they're willing to pay for them.
That's where the real conversation is.
Yup all three do this kinda shit all the time. But yet only one ever gets the actual real blow back from people ona large scale. Again you want shit to change targeting one while all companies includingnsteam do won't do shit.
Microsoft does shit like this all the time. But yet cause doesn't get nearly as much shit as Sony does. If we want shit to change all around we need put pressure on all three. Yes Nintendo as well cause with them pulling shit off of the EShop just to force resales.
Microsoft DELETED my account AND OneDrive!!?? After ACKNOWLEDGING that I’m the owner of the account and that it was compromised???
25 fucking years of data, thousands of euros spended on games?? My son’s baby pictures? GONE!
All because MICROSOFT couldn’t bring back a compromised account??
One of the biggest companies ever coulnd’t do that so they just deleted that shit like it was nothing?? Fucking shame on you!! @microsoftnl@MicrosoftHelps@MicrosoftHelpt@Microsoft
