"Tulsa King" garners a solid 6 out of 10 from me. Indeed, I contemplated awarding it an 7, but restraint prevailed.

Spoilers incoming:
The show revolves around an authoritative Italian mafioso, who takes the fall for a crime to protect the family boss, enduring a lengthy 25-year prison stint. Upon release, instead of receiving the expected gratitude, he finds himself exiled to the desolate stretches of Oklahoma, tasked with herding cattle and boosting business—an unwelcome thank-you indeed. Clashes with the younger family upstarts simmer beneath the surface.

This aging mafioso, now a stately 75 years old, returns to the fray in heartland America, aligning himself with a quirky ensemble of local farmhands while imparting life lessons. Furthermore, he entangles himself in an illicit affair with a female agent from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, complicating both their lives considerably.

Now to critic itself:
While the premise may not shine with originality—echoing the tones of shows like "Lilyhammer" and Russia's "Polar"—the execution here is faultless, masterfully crafted. Credit for this polished production, unsurprisingly, goes in part to Taylor Sheridan, a creator with the Midas touch. Known for his involvement in stellar projects like "Yellowstone," "Wind River," "1883," and "Mayor of Kingstown," Sheridan's influence is evident, though here, he serves only as the creator and writer for one of the nine episodes. It's a pity his hands did not steer more of the series; the narrative depth and cultural conflict explored in "Yellowstone" undeniably surpasses this endeavor.

The remaining creators, while competent, lack Sheridan's exquisite touch. This is not to diminish the show’s quality—it's very well done—but under Sheridan's full guidance, it could have risen from mere entertainment to a monumental work. Here’s an instance where a narrative about the clash between old and new America, played against the comedic backdrop of mafia antics amid Oklahoma's rural simplicity, balances humor with an overdose of drama. Surely, Stallone shines as the protagonist, yet his character’s portrayal as a fundamentally decent person, sentenced at 50, doesn’t ring entirely true—it’s overly sanitized, missing the complex layers that even comic portrayals like Snap Provolone in "Oscar" managed to capture.

Thus, while "Tulsa King" is certainly good, it stops short of greatness, leaving an appetite for what could have been had Sheridan fully commanded its direction. A tantalizing glimpse into what could have been a more profound drama, or a more compelling comedy, depending on the lens through which one prefers to view it.
