If you'd like to read his entire statement where he warns about all of the techniques he would later use in the SE, you can do so here: https://t.co/AQ7ZzoHyGo
"In the future it will become even easier for old negatives to become lost and be 'replaced' by new altered negatives. This would be a great loss to our society. Our cultural history must not be allowed to be rewritten." 3/4
"Attention should be paid to the interest of those who are yet unborn, who should be able to see this generation as it saw itself, and the past generation as it saw itself." - George Lucas (1988) 4/4
"The public's interest is ultimately dominant over all other interests. And the proof of that is that even a copyright law only permits the creators and their estate a limited amount of time to enjoy the economic fruits of that work." 2/4
Sadly a far cry from the George who once testified before the U.S. Congress that:
"A copyright is held in trust by its owner until it ultimately reverts to public domain. American works of art belong to the American public; they are part of our cultural history." 1/4
At #Cannes2024, George Lucas remained persistent that the unaltered versions of the Original Trilogy will not be re-released:
“I think a film belongs to its creator. When Michelangelo made the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, he looked at it and said: I’m going to redo this part.”
The folks at @originaltrilogy have provided us a base for the #ReleaseTheOriginalTrilogy campaign efforts! You'll find contact information, templates, & a history of the effort! https://t.co/jSnXe3IsRh
Talented artists put this original #VFX shot together, won awards, & inspired the next generation of film-makers & -goers. This shot deserves to be preserved, not only for fans, but for the artists who made them & those they inspired. #MayThe4th#ReleaseTheOriginalTrilogy
I just read the chapter in Bill Kimberlin (@Boont2)'s book on the SE, and there are no holds barred there. It's apparent the only reason and the only person who wanted the SE to exist was George Lucas, and he actively prevented a full preservation of the originals.
The original #StarWars films are sitting in a vault waiting to be released. There is no excuse to not give us these historical artifacts. There is no reason both the #SpecialEdition & #OriginalTrilogy couldn’t live side-by-side. #ReleaseTheOriginalTrilogy
