The quiet contrast in "MELT": Buddy finding new inspiration over drinks with Blacky and Toto, versus his former boss sitting alone in the empty shop, staring at Buddy's apron.
Sometimes letting someone go shows you what they truly brought to the table.

Sharpened to a point. In the final stage of every landscape, colored pencils handle the micro-details that brushes can't reach—every line demands a razor-sharp tip.

A sneak peek into the new Blacky Comic chapter: "MELT."
Buddy is working at a traditional shaved ice shop in Taipei. His creative "Dinosaur Shaved Ice" became an instant hit, bringing smiles to crowded tables and giving him a real sense of fulfillment. But at closing time, the boss complained non-stop about "wasting too many toppings." Frustrated and unappreciated, Buddy decided to quit on the spot.
Ever poured your heart into creating something special, only to have it measured in pennies?

Color pencil is the slowest medium I use.
Watercolor moves — broad washes, quick decisions, a whole sky in ten minutes. The brush carries the rhythm.
Color pencil is the opposite. One stroke at a time. A single ridge can take an hour. You can't rush it and you can't fake it. The pigment sits where you put it, and you can see every mistake.
What it gives back is texture. Watercolor suggests granite; color pencil describes it. Tiny marks that read as stone, as bark, as the edge of a leaf.
I think that's why this stage feels like the real painting. The first pass is composition. The second pass is color. The third pass — the slow one — is when the image starts to feel finished.
Not done. Just finished convincing me it could be.
How does your slowest medium change the way you see a piece?

Studying how Huang Gongwang used cool ridges against warm sunset skies to build depth — a 14th-century trick that still works in color pencil and watercolor. The detail pass on these ridges is where the trick actually pays off: cool rock faces catching the last warm light.
The classical composition translates.

The fox meadow detail — one of those pieces that didn't exist in the original 'Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains,' but felt right to add here. A small anchor in the lower corner, drawing the eye down before the eye climbs the ridges.
Sometimes a painting tells you what it needs.

Weekly recap: 'Pure Heart' got a new cover draft and the line art pass for Toto's Magic Shop. The landscape studies moved into color pencil detail — fox meadow, mountain ridges, sunset light. Two slow processes, both moving forward.
Short timelapse of the detail work posted earlier this week on Bluesky.

The next stage of this landscape will be colour-pencil detail.
Watercolour establishes the atmosphere first: cool rock, dark trees, warm light and the small house settling into the scene. Then the pencil comes in more quietly—to sharpen the grass, stones and branches, and to clarify where the eye should pause.
I like this change of pace. The brush carries the larger rhythm; the pencil slows me down and asks me to look again.
Tools do not decide the image, but each one changes the way attention moves across the paper.
What tool helps you notice details?

Looking at how an ink-and-watercolour landscape can hold both structure and story: rock faces build the rhythm, small trees set the scale, and warm light opens the scene.
Next, colour pencil will bring out the quieter textures.

The cover for a new Blacky Comic chapter, "MELT," is finally taking shape.
I'm drawn to the quiet moment before a story begins—the rough composition, the unanswered question, the feeling that something is about to change.
Page 1 is still only a sketch, but Buddy 's small act of care is already becoming clear.
Which part of a new story do you enjoy most: the cover, the first page, or the rough sketches?
