During the 15th century, coffee held such significance in Turkish society that a woman had a valid reason for divorce if her husband failed to provide her with the daily coffee quota. Conversely, a prospective Turkish bride often faced judgment based on her coffee-making abilities. Whether a Turkish woman was chosen or rejected often depended on the quality of the coffee she brewed and served to her potential spouse.

In 1656, the Ottoman Grand Vizier Koprulu implemented new laws that banned coffee and closed down coffee houses due to concerns that men were congregating too frequently to sip coffee, question political authorities, and possibly plan revolts. However, following violent riots and substantial public backlash, these laws were swiftly revoked, replaced instead by heavy taxation on coffee houses.

Turkish coffee has also been employed for fortune-telling, where individuals read the patterns left in the cup after finishing their coffee. This form of divination, known as "fal," is primarily practiced by Turkish women.

Lastly, when in Turkey, it's essential to note that Turkish coffee is distinct, requiring an exceptionally fine grind (finer than espresso) and boiling instead of brewing. Each pot yields four pours, and if you prefer it sweetened, the sugar must be mixed before boiling to avoid ruining the coffee. When ordering Turkish coffee, specifying your desired sweetness level in advance is crucial.
