Israel Used the “Where’s Daddy?” System
Israel used the “Where’s Daddy?” system to track targeted individuals and carry out airstrikes once they entered their family homes. The system follows these targets and notifies the military when they enter their residences.
Sources familiar with the Israeli military’s artificial intelligence systems told +972 Magazine and Local Call that every person in the Gaza Strip has a specific home that can be associated with them. As a result, the Israeli military’s surveillance systems can easily and automatically “link” individuals to their family homes in order to determine, in real time, the moment they enter them. Numerous automated software programs have been developed with this capability. These programs track thousands of individuals simultaneously and issue an alert when they are inside their homes. They then send an automatic notification to the targeting officer, who subsequently marks the house for bombing. One of the most prominent of these systems that has been revealed is known as “Where’s Daddy?”
Accordingly, the system operates by striking homes only after the targeted individuals have entered them, regardless of how many other people are living inside those homes. The program therefore clearly commits the crime of genocide in all of its legal elements by bombing houses with their inhabitants still inside, irrespective of the large numbers of civilians present. The Israeli occupation is capable of targeting the wanted individual alone before they enter the house, or in any other location where they may be found, with far fewer incidental casualties. Instead, it chooses to bomb them together with their entire family after they enter their home, reflecting a clear and deliberate policy of eliminating Palestinians regardless of their affiliation or gender.
It should be noted that the “Where’s Daddy?” system is used to determine the exact moment targeted individuals enter their homes. Approximately 20 seconds later, the “target” is bombed together with their family. This is how the system acquired its name. The system, along with similar AI-powered technological systems, is used to identify targets and suspected individuals and classify them as legitimate military targets based on probabilistic information that, in most cases, is not directly related to the individual’s location or identity. Instead, it relies on identifying shared characteristics and behavioral patterns among the general population of the Gaza Strip, particularly males, and comparing them with members of armed factions operating in Gaza.
It is also important to note that the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor has reported that Israel has cooperated with Google through several technological projects, including Project Nimbus, which provides the Israeli military with technology that enables expanded surveillance and the unlawful collection of information on Palestinians, thereby contributing to the entrenchment and reinforcement of policies of oppression against Palestinians and facilitating the commission of various crimes against them. This project, in particular, has attracted significant criticism from human rights organizations and has prompted numerous Google employees to protest and resign, while others were reportedly dismissed because of their opposition. The Israeli military has also been reported to use facial recognition technology through Google Photos to monitor Palestinian civilians in Gaza and compile what has been described as an “assassination list” targeting them.
