Sometimes, you see them tracking a criminal and the boss ask, 'what do we know about him?' This is because they want to know him and understand what led him to this point in order to make a connection to the crime.

A: he grew up in Utah, lived with his grandmother, attended Novel High, graduated top of his class in Columbia. He did an internship at the Supreme Court where he clerked with Justice Kimberly and worked at XXX before he went off the rader

Boss: His family is okay. What could be the problem

B: Wait..... 2 years ago, his daughter was diagnosed with neuroblastoma. His grandma died and her estate was used to clear her debt and XXX

Team: Shit. He is doing it for his daughter.

If you are smart, you'll notice their approach changes because they now understand WHY. They appeal to the emotion of the criminal and let him know he doesnt have to carry out the plan he has. They try to see how best they can help him or the daughter if alive.

Has he committed a crime? YES. Has he hurt others? YES. Will he be arrested? YES. However, in understanding him, they have come to understand his thought, pattern, behaviour and the criminal mind behind the crime.

This is why sociology and forensic psychology are important in criminology and criminal investigation
