Subcomandante Marcos’ letter to Eduardo Galeano:
❝I am writing this to you in the early morning of May, after April 30, 1995, which is Children's Day here in Mexico. We Mexican children celebrate that day, most of the time, in spite of the adults. For example, thanks to the supreme government, today many indigenous Mexican children celebrate their day in the mountains, far from their homes, in poor hygiene conditions, without a party and with the greatest poverty: that of not having a place to lay down their hunger and hope.
The supreme government says that it has not expelled these children from their homes; it has only put thousands of soldiers in their lands. With the soldiers came booze, prostitution, theft, torture, and harassment. The supreme government says that the soldiers come to "defend national sovereignty." The government's soldiers "defend" Mexico from Mexicans. These children have not been expelled, the government says, and they have no reason to feel frightened by so many war tanks, cannons, helicopters, planes, and thousands of soldiers. Nor do they have reason to be scared, even if those soldiers bring orders to arrest and kill the fathers of these children. No, these children have not been expelled from their homes. They share the uneven floor of the mountain for the pleasure of being near their roots; they share scabies and malnutrition for the simple pleasure of scratching themselves and for showing off a slender figure.
The children of the owners of the government spend their day with parties and gifts.
The children of the Zapatistas, owners of nothing but their dignity, spend their day playing at being soldiers who recover the lands the government took from them. They play at planting the cornfield, at gathering firewood, at getting sick with no one to cure them, at being hungry and, instead of food, filling their mouths with songs. For example, that song they like to sing at night, when the rain and fog are at their thickest, and which goes more or less like this:
'The horizon can already be seen, Zapatista combatant, The path will be marked For those who come behind.'
From the mountains of the Mexican Southeast. Subcomandante Insurgente Marcos May 2, 1995.❞
