@AnnaClare_ Build a society like that, and fewer people will NEED welfare, we can afford to be more generous with the ones that do, which in turn reduces poverty, which improves health and education outcomes, which reduces the need for welfare.

Fix poverty with UBI is also a route, obvs.

@AnnaClare_ It seems to me that if we want the cost of welfare to come down, we should invest in the causes - make people less sick, with massive mental health provision, by reducing NHS wait times, preventative medicine, clean air and ventilation, lifelong education, schools that work, etc.

@AnnaClare_ That might work. I'm not sure the Lords would matter - it's not a given that the opposition is represented in the Lords. If a new party suddenly swept to second place, the Lords would have to make it work.

@AnnaClare_ It's a wild one. I think, perhaps, not? The Prime Minister has to tell the King he can form a Government, but I don't think one forms an Opposition in quite the same way. I think it's just assumed that the leader of the second biggest party is the Leader of the Opposition.

A reminder. The US had trade deals with Canada & and Mexico, and Trump just tore them up on a whim.

The EU has never reneged on a trade deal. They are a more reliable partner.
