Having a human in the loop is not the same as meaningful oversight.
In health care AI, this has become more of a phrase than a practice. Clinicians are too busy to properly review what an algorithm recommends. Junior staff cannot challenge systems that their bosses have approved
The real question, as we argue in the paper, is not whether a human is in the loop. It is whether the people most at risk are actually being protected.
