🗣️ Italian Osasuna coach Alessio Lisci brilliantly breaks down the issues in Italian football — from youth academies to playing systems — highlighting how teams are now operating WITHOUT wingers:

“In Italy, there’s a lot of talk about it. What I can say is that if a country like mine, Italy, which historically is one of the best national teams in the world, has gone three World Cups in a row without qualifying, it’s a big problem, a very big one.

We need to stop and change many things. I don’t want to say what to change... But it’s evident that the Italian league has a high level, but among the top-5, it’s the one with the most foreigners.

The youth academies also have lots of foreigners, especially the top ones. It’s a problem. There are no reserve teams, which is another problem. There are many things…

Then the playing system that most teams use is 3-5-2, and this has led to WINGERS NOT EXISTING and there being no players who can do ONE-ON-ONE.

In Italy, there are no players capable of doing what Lamine did at the Euros to unblock matches. There are many things adding up that don’t come from one year. They come from three World Cups back, which is a lot. To change, you need time and patience.

What’s the problem? That when the Euros come around, Italy will want to win the Euros again... when it’s a team that’s been years without qualifying for the World Cup. I hope the structure changes and they try to do things, and from there, have patience.” 🧠🇮🇹
