Do you know what the main problem is with you folks and shite arguments like this? You are treating these children simply as symbols of governmental failure rather than as human beings with present, immediate needs. It is also evident most of you do not know how NGOs and Civil societies work. For example, you cannot simply walk up to a public school and start handing out incentives to pupils without due permission from the Ministry of Education. If you also try to antagonize the government, your efforts will be utterly frustrated.
You will go on to condemn Tunde for compromising while you remain morally spotless but also entirely useless to the children in question. You want to keep them under the bridge, theoretically, so the bridge can function as an indictment of the state. Do you actually think you are more righteous by performing outrage on social media?
Listen, the children under the bridge are already there. The question is not philosophical anymore. They are hungry, undereducated, exposed to violence, and statistically on their way to lives you hypocrites will later lament. If he leaves these children right now and start supporting your candidate, will this immediately destroy all the slums in Lagos State?
All of you using these children's suffering as rhetorical ammunition against someone trying to address that suffering directly, I want to ask you plainly now: What exactly are you proposing instead, and when does it begin?
If you look at any system that works, the defining feature is not routine elections; it is ACCOUNTABILITY.
The idea that the system gives you no unchecked powers to appropriate public resources or authority for private gain; that’s the true element of functional system.
So, at the start of the year, @LoladeSowoolu started this thing where the kids earn a small amount for doing housework.
Good idea.
Last Sunday, we tabulated how much they've earned this year. The promise being that they can use the money to do whatever they want for Christmas.
After the tabulation, both were happy with their gate takings, then Daddy removed 10% of their earnings. They both protested, so Daddy sat them down and explained about government and taxes. They were both incredibly unhappy, but accepted the logic of taxation, especially after Daddy explained, using real-world examples, that it is taxes that fund government services, and that the 10% deduction would be used to get new screws and nails to repair some fixtures that had given way while Daddy was away for work.
A week later, and the fixtures haven't been repaired, so both kids have come to ask why.
Daddy is now explaining to them about transparency, accountability, and, more importantly, embezzlement.
Let's see if they will take the matter to the judiciary (Mummy), as the English would do, or if there will be an insurrection, as the French would do, or if they will docily accept it as good Nigerians.
Whatever the outcome, some life lessons are being learned...
