This is a common complaint, but it's missing the history of the rule.

Defenses aren't just lapsing getting beat in behind, they're deliberately exposing that much space BECAUSE offside exists.

If you remove offside, as many people seem to want to do, defenders aren't going to maintain that high line, it would be suicide.

Instead, they would retreat back towards their own goal to shrink the space, condensing the attacking areas and removing all these plays people think are being robbed by offside.

The rule originally was created to stop goal hanging. It basically forced this space to attack. Without the rule, you don't get the space at all.
