I see many managers hiring the wrong people and then spending the rest of their managerial life trying to fix a hiring mistake. They complain about poor performance, attitude problems, and lack of initiative, yet the problem often started at the hiring stage.

Most people management problems are hiring problems in disguise. If you hire well, managing becomes easier. If you hire badly, no amount of supervision, meetings, warnings, or motivational speeches will fully solve the problem.

Managers spend too much time trying to repair what should have been prevented through better selection processes. If you are a manager, is this not true?

In December, I drove my assistant home after she had had a little too much to drink at our office party.
