16 Arab Islamic Countries Condemn Somaliland’s Opening of Purported Embassy in Jerusalem

The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar, the Arab Republic of Egypt, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the Republic of Türkiye, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the Republic of Indonesia, the Republic of Djibouti, the Federal Republic of Somalia, the State of Palestine, the Sultanate of Oman, the Republic of the Sudan, the Republic of Yemen, and the Lebanese Republic condemn in the strongest terms the illegal and unacceptable step taken by the so-called “Somaliland” region in opening a purported “embassy” in occupied Jerusalem. This constitutes a flagrant violation of international law and relevant international resolutions, and represents a direct infringement on the legal and historical status of occupied Jerusalem.

The Ministers reaffirm their categorical rejection of any unilateral measures aimed at entrenching an illegal reality in occupied Jerusalem or conferring legitimacy on any entities or arrangements that contravene international law and relevant United Nations resolutions. They reiterate that East Jerusalem has been occupied Palestinian territory since 1967, and that any measures intended to alter its legal and historical status are null and void and without legal effect.

The Ministers further emphasize their full support for the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia, and their unequivocal rejection of any unilateral measures that undermine the unity of Somali territory or infringe upon its sovereignty.

For 35 years, Somalia’s southern leaders chose to
be nice to the one-clan secessionists, (and no one did that more than HSM), while at the same time turning their backs on northern clans defending the union - if not openly undermining them. Far from persuading them to return to the union, that approach only deepened the roots of their secession and sustained their occupation of unionist regions.

The world was now waiting for robust muscular response to Israeli’s recognition of the secessionist clan in exchange for military. But as usual HSM’s response is to repeat
the same old mealy-mouthed appeal promising that Somalia will spare nothing to be nice to
them. It’s a message to them that he will take no military action against them, or defend the northern unionist regions now left to fend for themselves.

But the problem will not end there. The breakaway of “Somaliland” will open a Pandora’s box’. It will be the prelude to the breakup of southern Somalia into various clan mini states.

Somaliland’s independence is not realistic in terms of ethnicity, religion sect and language. There is no difference between Somaliland and other parts of Somalia on above criteria. There is only one difference which is clan and federalism would perfectly suit. If every clan gets an independent state, Africa would have more than 500 states.

However, main problem with Somalia-Somaliland issue is Mogadishu. If Mogadishu solve political and security problems for other parts of Somalia, Somaliland would not have strong case for independence. So blaming Somaliland doesn’t help, let’s make Mogadishu works.

I understand your recognition of Somaliland, and I also understand the pressure you may face from AIPAC with the idea of relocating Gazans there.

But have you considered what would follow?
1: The first flight of Gaza refugees landing in Hargeisa would likely spark calls for unconditional Somali unity in Hargeisa, Berbera, and Burao.

2: Other clans in Somaliland would also push for unification with Somalia, effectively dissolving the current administration.

3: Ethiopia could use the presence of Hamas “next door” as a pretext to invade, seize parts of Somaliland, and secure sea access.

4:Djibouti and Somalia’s federal government would reject this violation of Somali sovereignty and territorial integrity.

5:The African Union would oppose it as a breach of the 1963 AU Charter risking a Pandora’s box for other secessionist movements across Africa.

6:China and Russia would likely veto any recognition of Somaliland.

7: Internally, Somaliland is already fragmented, Northwest state is recognized by Somalia republic as member state of Somali federal government , and Awdal State’s emergence is in progress.

8: If Ethiopia tries to control territory “from river to sea,” Egypt would deploy troops, sparking proxy wars inside Somalia.

9: The US would be viewed as an imperialist force in the region—deeply resented in the Horn of Africa.

Here is Abdirashid Maalim Farah returning to Lascanod presumably to stand for the presidency of the new Federal member State. As you can hear from
his speech, he is claiming to
be the champion of the SSC liberation struggle. He cites specific activities
which he claims he have originated it in Minnesota and run. One is the organisation called National Somali Unionist Movement (NSUM).

I feel I owe it to our people to react to his claim and put the record straight. Contrary to what he said, it was a group of us who created this organisation through teleconferences in 2007. Soon after we held our first formal meeting in London in the same year when Mohamed Ali Mire was elected as the chairman and Abdullahi Spanish as deputy. I was elected as responsible for foreign relations. As such, Abdirashid had nothing to do with it.

Puntland’s information minister, Mohamoud Aideed, has become a controversial figure dominating the news between Puntland and SSC-Khaatumo. He used to be a member of our NSUM (Northern Somali Union Movement) which we formed over a decade ago after SNM occupied Lascanod. He was then
an ultra SSC/Khaatumo supporter - a real Dervish as I remember.

Nothing wrong in principle to support the Puntland we all created in 1998 for one purpose (albeit it betrayed us when it came to the test), or to be a minister of it. That’s is a personal choice. What’s wrong is to oppose the free choice of his people to form their own separate State, and become openly a mercenary used by Deni against his people. They’re unstoppable but sooner or later he will be no
longer useful for Deni and end up in the dustbin. I thought the Mohamoud Aideed I knew will not end up that way but be in the forefront of the struggle of his people. He still
have very short time to redeem himself.

Dear Mariel Müller, it is good that you investigate into the long-distance nationalism of Somali actors potentially involved in violence back in Somalia. Yet, to do that properly, you also should have the relevant background on political dynamics in the country. Besides, you should look at all sides, not only at one. I have been researching on northern Somali issues concerning Somaliland, Puntland, and the conflict between both entities for more than two decades and have published my analyses, based on long-term ethnographic research (see here: https://t.co/QIXoTJovDI). I have researched the pre-history of the conflict over Lasanod which escalated violently in early 2023 (and which you mention in your text). Given my close local contacts (on all sides) I have followed up events very carefully throughout 2023 and have even visited Lasanod during the time of war. In a nutshell: Lasanod and the whole east of Somaliland never really was part of the secessionist project of the “Republic of Somaliland”. Puntland and Somaliland quarrelled over controlling the region. Eventually Somaliland militarily occupied Dhulbahante lands with the centre of Lasanod in 2007. Insecurity prevailed there under Somaliland rule. Locals demonstrated against it. Somaliland escalated the violence at a new level when opening fire on unarmed demonstrators in Lasanod between 27 Dec. 2022 and early January 2023. When the local population then decided to reject Somaliland’s continued occupation the Somaliland troops started shelling and attacking the city, full of civilians, on 6 Feb. 2023. Locals put up resistance. Somaliland forces kept on attacking and also hit civilian infrastructure including mosques, schools and hospitals. You find an extensive report on the situation here (https://t.co/e3gHMF17JC), based on many interviews and my above mentioned visit to Lasanod in late May 2023. Now, regarding those Somalis who visited Somalia from Germany to involve themselves in politics and possibly, the conduct of war: Please also consider those who came from Germany and joined the Somaliland troops attacking Lasanod and, likely, committing war crimes (see documentation here: https://t.co/PbOGhcDlOW here https://t.co/NBEisZZDmj). Among those “war tourists” from Germany coming from Somaliland (whatever he might have stated during his asylum interview; it is clear that he is Isaaq from Somaliland, based on his own Facebook documentation, who is close to the former SL president Muse Bihi) is a man called Abdifatah Ibrahim Abdi. He likely lives in Dreieich in Germany (according to whis own statements on Facebook). This is his Facebook profile: https://t.co/GX0xYKkTku are a few pics from his profile. They depict his militaristic attitude. On one pic he states “from Germany to Goojacade”. You should know that Goojacade is the place from where, mainly, the Somaliland forces conducted their attacks including indiscriminate shelling of Lasanod in the first half of 2023. Maybe you try to follow up with him and others like him too? There are more “Somalilanders” in Germany (typically hiding their true clan identity, stating falsely to BAMF that they came from “southern Somalia” where they were allegedly “persecuted by Al Shabaab” or so, while actually they came from Somaliland in the northwest) who like to play war at home, when it goes against clans opposing the (increasingly unpopular) Somaliland regime.
