🚨 BREAKING: Trump describes Somaliland as “a totally different country” and urges an immediate name change to distinguish it from Somalia.
“I think they should change the name immediately.”
A powerful statement reinforcing what Somalilanders have long maintained: Somaliland has its own identity, its own people and its own future.
GUUL SOMALILAND! 💚🤍❤️

57 years ago today, Major General Mohamed Siad Barre's soldiers toppled Somalia's elected government.
The coup ended the constitutional terms on which Somaliland joined the union.
US policy still defers to Mogadishu as if 1969 never happened.

Ethiopia warns that recognizing Somaliland could strengthen Al-Shabaab, but Somaliland officials reject the security concerns, arguing recognition would instead bolster regional stability and give Ethiopia strategic access to the sea.

Somaliland was the Northern British protectorate that joined with the Southern Italian Somaliland after they both gained independence in 1960 to form the Somali Republic.
It also shows Aden, the city in Yemen taken by British forces in 1839 secure a coaling station and naval base for ships traveling to India.
The area that was British Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 after the fall of the Barre regime. It calls itself Somaliland, but the UN hasn’t recognized it and considers it an autonomous region of Somalia.
While Somalia sinks under floods, starves from famine, and gets butchered by terrorists, the men in its parliament are busy arguing to keep mutilating little girls genitals. 😳🇸🇴
Ethiopian troops are deployed in Somalia’s Bay region to keep Al-Shabaab out. Yet Hassan Yaqub Ali, one of the group’s most senior commanders, has reportedly been seen on the front line in Diinsoor, right in Ethiopia’s area of responsibility.

Israel and Somaliland are beginning to build an economic bridge.
In Faith & Freedom News, Khurram Ali Raza, chair of the Abrahamic Movement Pakistan, has published a full account of the evening we hosted, Jews and Arabs together, in a yard in Bat Hefer for the Abrahamic Movement's Somaliland delegation, as part of "Building a Shared Future." Jews and Somalilanders sat in one circle, beneath the movement's flag.
But what the piece adds is what came after that evening:
"The Israel–Somaliland connection has begun moving beyond symbolism. The Abrahamic Movement and the Israel–Somaliland Friendship Association have announced efforts to establish business-development infrastructure between the two communities, including representatives responsible for economic cooperation."
Raza also quotes what I said that evening about the next step, a shared Abrahamic identity:
"not one that erases national, religious, or cultural differences, but one that gives people a wider circle of belonging."
And in the session on the history of the Isaaq people and the atrocities of the Siad Barre dictatorship in the late 1980s, I said that peacebuilding "must begin with listening to the experiences of communities that have suffered."
This is where an evening like that is measured. Not by how moving it was, but by what gets built after it. Friendship between peoples is born in listening. It takes root when real partnerships, in work and in trade, grow around it.

SOMALILAND FEATURED ON REGIONAL ALLIANCES MAP IN NETANYAHU PRESENTATION
A map displayed during Benjamin Netanyahu’s security presentation identifies Somaliland separately from Somalia and places it among territories considered friendly by Israel and the United Arab Emirates.
The graphic, bearing the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung logo, outlines competing geopolitical alignments across the Middle East and the Horn of Africa.
Somaliland’s inclusion highlights its strategic relevance along the Gulf of Aden, near the entrance to the Red Sea, and its potential role in regional trade and security cooperation.
