One of my favorite tribes in Nigeria is the Igbo tribe. They are passionate about who they are — their culture, their red attire, their long names, and their light-skinned women. They will quickly tell you, “I am Igbo!”

I spent years with the Yoruba tribe too — also decent people. They believe they are the refined, educated ones: colorful in their agbada, but less noisy. Spending time with them made me appreciate their calm confidence.

As I moved around, I also came to appreciate the Hausa/Fulani people — very decent as well, kind, generous, and full of life. Like the Igbo, the Yoruba, and many other tribes, the Hausa people are good people.

That diversity is what makes Nigeria one of the best places in Africa — despite the lack of resources reaching the common man, the theft and corruption by politicians, and the insecurity that often stems from both neglect and greed.

The Igbo tribe, however, is special. They use social media more than most for activism and strategic communication. Sometimes, though, they will insult you, attack you, call you an idiot — or all of the above — even when you’re trying to say, “I am not against you.” And at that point, you’re left thinking: Now that you’ve insulted me, how do we even communicate anymore?

I understand the pain around their leader, Nnamdi Kanu, still in detention. I spent a long time in Igbo states — from Anambra to Enugu — even spending time at Soludo’s house. I was once rescued by Peter Obi’s team while covering an election after supporters reacted angrily to a question my colleague asked. I covered it all.

I understand the Igbo story — from the civil war, to the post-civil-war reality, to the feeling of being treated as second-class citizens.

And for the record, one of my best friends in Nigeria is Igbo.

(By the way, “Igbo” loosely means “people of the forest” — rooted, resilient, and fiercely independent.)

I just wish we could have more serious and focused conversations.
