Very happy to see our work estimating district HIV risk group proportions, with a Bayesian spatio-temporal model, out this week in @PLOSGPH!

@ChristoPhraser shares insightful data from PopART to inform future priorities. HIV testing needs to keep focusing on the scale & reaching those with chronic infection. Efforts to support engagement & re-engagement in care also important #test4HIV#AIDS2022
Stark warnings on use of recency testing to estimate HIV incidence. Alex Welte @SACEMA_CoE “Surveillance in the programmatic context [w/ recency testing] just isn’t what we’re able to do”. #AIDS2022
@Mat__MG: trends of recent infections as a % of positive tests are in the opposite direction to those in incidence in Côte d’Ivoire, Malawi, and Mozambique. Inclusion of testing volume trends vital to interpretation. Beware! #AIDS2022
Lots of fun at #AIDS2022 presenting Key Population estimates in sub-Saharan Africa.
Key findings:
- KP size estimates highly uncertain
- Burden is high (1.5% of 15-49 adults but 6.3% of PLHIV)
- ART coverage gaps in all KPs & worst in MSM and PWID.
Surveillance data quality more important than quantity - cannot sacrifice robust surveillance at this crucial stage of the epidemic & should be mindful of this when collecting routine data #AIDS2022
❓What is ‘Precision Public Health’ and can it help us in the HIV response?
I’ve enjoyed learning about this—come hear some of my thoughts and share yours this morning at #AIDS2022 session PR07: ‘Strengthening Health Systems’, 9:15 EDT!
Also amazing Rena Janamnuaysook
Because “Transmission is driven by the many who infect few, not the few who infect many” [@ChristoPhraser] precision public health has its limits, and priority must be on reducing viremia in men to drive down exposure to HIV and HIV incidence
