I always compare soccer to hockey. Can you imagine a referee in the Stanley Cup final game giving a major penalty (a subjective call by the ref), so that one team must play a man short for the last five minutes of a tied championship game? It wouldn't happen for the integrity of the Cup. This is why many American sports fans aren't into soccer. The refs control the game too much. That bogus call took away all my interest in the game.
