[The National Eye Health Programme @NEHP_FMoH]

Yesterday, in the Banquet Hall of the State House, Abuja, we gathered for our much anticipated event, marking the World Sight Day. Distinguished guests including the Honorable Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Tunji Alausa, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Mrs Daju Kachollom S. mni, Permanent Secretary to the State House, Engineer Adebiyi Olusesan, Secretary Health Services and Environment secretariat of the FCT, Dr Adedolapo Fasawe, Dr Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr Wahab Alawuye King, Representative of the First Lady, Dr Funmilola Bankole, Permanent Secretary Lagos State Ministry of Health amongst others graced the occasion.

Amidst the vibrant atmosphere, we provided free eye checks for all. However, the true highlight of the evening was the grand unveiling of our strategic documents: the National Eye Health Strategic Development Plan 2024-2028, National guidelines for screening and management of Diabetic Retinopathy 2023, and The Nigeria Glaucoma Guideline and Toolkit 2023. The National Coordinator, National Eye Health Programme, Dr. Oteri Okolo Eme provided an overview of these documents to our distinguished guests.

The JigiBola 2.0 initiative was also launched, JigiBola 2.0 adopts a dual-model approach; in the short term, the first tranche of 40,000 reading glasses will be distributed across Kwara, Kogi, Katsina, Plateau, Kano and Rivers.
Thereafter, a 3 – 4year program will be designed to boost eye care services nationwide through training, access to technology, and research.

As we commemorate this historic occasion, we must join hands to ensure that we do our possible best in reducing the burden of avoidable blindness and visual impairment in Nigeria
