On this special day as we celebrate the impact of women in society, I extend heartfelt congratulations to two Kenyan leaders whose remarkable success has earned them appointments to the leadership of key regional and global institutions. Congratulations to Hon. Lady Justice Ann Amadi on her appointment as Judge of the @EACJCourt, and Hon. Monica Juma (@AmbMonicaJuma) on being named the new ED of the @UNODC. These achievements are symbolic of two impactful careers and are an encouragement of the potential of Kenyan women to break through the global glass ceiling. Serve well, Ladies.

I also express special congratulations to Mr. Chris Diaz @DiazChrisAfrica and Mr. Kiprono Kittony @KipronoKittony on their appointments as Member and Chair of the @KenyaAirways Board of Directors respectively. As part of the leadership in Nairobi, you will hear no excuses from me. Yesterday’s flood situation was an indictment. We know it’s a sum total of many failures but mostly failures of leadership. We must do better because you don’t deserve this. For all those who slept on the roads, those counting loses from the flood damage poleni sana. Sadly, the County disaster team has confirmed to me that multiple lives were also lost. My office has sent out teams to assess the situation and see how we can help. Meanwhile, It is obvious that we need a comprehensive review of how the city drains because the piecemeal interventions are not working. His journey with Mama Ida reminds us that sacrifice is both public and deeply personal.

As his comrade, I pledge to uphold the struggle for a better Kenya, where the constitution is held true, the human rights upheld in it are respected and its democratic promise is realized.

Raila Odinga was a true champion of democracy. A child of independence, he endured decades of struggle and sacrifice for the broader cause of freedom and self-governance in Kenya. Time and again, I personally saw him put the interests of his country ahead of his own ambitions. Like few other leaders anywhere, he was willing to choose the path of peaceful reconciliation without compromising his core values. Through his life, Raila Odinga set an example not just for Kenyans, but across Africa and around the world. I know he will be missed. Michelle and I send our deepest condolences to his family and to the people of Kenya.

I am shocked to learn of the demise of former Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, a patriot, a pan-Africanist, a democrat and a leader who made significant contributions to democracy in Kenya and in Africa.

Kenya has lost one of its most formidable leaders who shaped the trajectory of our beloved country. Africa has lost a leading voice in pushing for peace, security and development. The world has lost a great leader.
