We've been thinking a lot about this in the context of @linear. Linear is often described as "opinionated", but "purpose-built" is a much better way to describe it (h/t @karrisaarinen)
Most issue trackers out there are general-purpose tools. They are endlessly flexible to support any use case. They treat task management as the end goal.
Linear is neither an issue tracker nor a project mgmt tool. It supports both of those use cases but only in the context of product development. It's not opinionated, it's intentionally designed to achieve a specific outcome: Building great products.
Linear might feel opinionated to a legacy IT consulting firm, but to a modern software team it should just feels natural because it's purpose-designed for the way they already work.
When you study the best people in any craft, you'll notice that they tend to use purpose-built tools. It's the combination of their talent + the quality of their tools that makes them great.
• Christopher Nolan doesn't shoot his movies on an iPhone. He uses specific IMAX equipment.
• A sushi master doesn't use a general-purpose kitchen knife, but a particular Yanagiba knife.
• Usain bolt does not run in off-the-shelf sneakers, but in precisely engineered running shoes.
None of these tools are opinionated.
They are purpose-built.
