Sakkan is always a crucial step to make sure the character is on model at every frames. Actually some project can drop this step regarding to production choice or budget restraint, but they will lose the character consistency in return.

Sometimes you may notice that the timing chart in a textbook is far more detailed than what you see in real production. Actually, it depends on an animator’s habits and the complexity of the shot. If the cut is simple, the notes can be just as simple, clear enough for everyone to understand.

In reality, the notes are often simpler, but they still indicate the main points of the timing chart: the key frames and the inbetweens between them.

To make this cut, we draw 6 different drawings of the character and the ground, then we put them on the loop. This create the non-stop running sequence.

Did you know why people have to use colored paper in animation?
Each color represents a specific stage or animator's review in the production, making it easier for everyone to track a cut as it moves through the workflow.

For example in our studio, we use green for Enshutsu check, yellow for Sakkan and orange for Sousakan. Different studio will use the colors paper differently, but the purpose is the same: to keep the production organized and easy to follow.
