From Ukiyo-e to Manga: A Pepe Monogatari is about to arrive.
Volume II of Pephistory of Art takes shape as a journey into the visual soul of Japan, a path that spans centuries of images, transformations, and reinventions.
It all begins with Ukiyo-e, the “floating world” of the Edo period.
There, among wooden bridges, torii gates suspended in the mist, and faces that seem to sing time itself, Japanese art establishes its first rules: line as breath, emptiness as presence, nature as the stage of the human.
It is a universe where everything flows and everything remains, like Hokusai’s wave still rising after two centuries.
From there, the journey unfolds toward modernity:
the opening to the world, early cultural exchanges, Meiji graphics, Taishō design, the essential line that becomes poster, symbol, urban icon. In this transition, Japanese art does not lose itself, it bends, transforms, evolves, yet preserves its core: the harmony between gesture and vision.
And then the final destination: manga.
Here Japan invents a new language, vast as a cosmos and intimate as a diary. A narrative revolution where the tradition of ink meets the speed of the present, generating heroes, emotions, infinite worlds.
Manga is not a rupture but a natural outcome, modernity meeting the ancient soul of the stroke and carrying it forward into a boundless imagination.
Pepe travels through all of this.
He crosses sliding doors, shadows, landscapes, visual alphabets, until he finds himself in the electric stream of contemporary Japanese comics.
A passage through eras, forms, and spirits.
A bridge that links what has been with what continues to become.
