It’s not other countries that are taking advantage of us. It’s our own refusal to sufficiently cut our working class in on the spoils of our reserve currency status that is the problem. Trump’s solution is to take food off of other countries’ plates that are poorer.
"Tariffs will encourage production to move to the United States"
"The tariffs will turn off randomly but might also turn on again at any time"
Imagine getting all the downsides of tariffs while ensuring no possible upside (even if any upside was always unlikely)
For all of Trump's disregard for checks on executive power, it's notable that he hasn't pushed for the Fed to simply lower rates. This is likely because advisors are telling him this would be inflationary. But this is wrong, as all those years of QE should have taught everyone.
Trump calls other countries holding our treasuries as reserve asset unfair currency manipulation, yet wants to remain reserve currency nation. Then when demand for treasuries declines, and pushes rates up he backs down. Seems like he doesn't realize what he was asking for.
Inflation today is driven by monopolistic supply, not excess demand. Energy, food and more. The whole discussion about interest rates ignores that. Go after the source (anti-monopoly, and the multiple causes of “excess” profits ie “rents”). @IsabellaMWeber very good on this.
New Paper. Understanding the International Rise and Fall of Inflation Since 2020
"We find that three factors played a dominant role across the 21 countries we study: energy price inflation, food price inflation, and shipping cost inflation, as measured by the Harper charter rate. Taken together, these three variables account for between 21 percent and 94 percent of the variation in headline inflation shocks, depending on the country, with energy price inflation by far the dominant factor." https://t.co/b2dzmRLUiV
“The sleeper hit of this year’s DC Labor FilmFest, attracting nearly 200 attendees to last night’s screening at the AFI Silver. The rapt audience stayed for a 45-minute discussion about flipping our understanding of the national debt — and the nature of money — upside down.” 👊🏽
“Money is fundamentally a public utility.
We have to shift from their money, to OUR money.
Money belongs to us, it’s the people’s money”
