I have been informed that both Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh are expected to issue official statements today regarding the withdrawal/quashing of FIRs and the release of those who were arrested.

At the same time, we strongly condemn the targeted witch hunt against young protestors and the registration of FIRs against them. Such legal action is no different from the use of pellet guns and tear gas on peaceful protestors on July 20.

Peaceful dissent cannot be met with repression.

The misuse of criminal machinery against Ruchika Singh is unacceptable. Profanity does not attract criminal case. 50% of Lok Sabha MPs have criminal cases against them, close to 100 MPs in the BJP. I think it’s high time for the country’s big influencers especially women to speak up for that girl. Right now, she’s facing the biggest backlash from the protest.

I never expected the CJP to stand with her anyway. They’ve already betrayed the very students they claimed to fight for, so I don’t see them as trustworthy.

At this moment, Rahul Gandhi and other Opposition leaders should speak up for her and ensure she isn’t left to face this alone.

No matter what she said, nobody deserves to become the target of an entire mob.

FIR has been registered at the Noida Expressway police station in Uttar Pradesh against a young woman in connection with an objectionable remark made against the Prime Minister during a demonstration at Jantar Mantar.

Based on a complaint from Smriti Singh, a resident of Ghaziabad, a case has been registered against Ruchika Singh, a resident of Noida Sector 168, under provisions of the BNS 2023.

The police have registered an FIR against Ruchika Singh for allegedly using abusive language against the Prime Minister during the protest at Jantar Mantar.

In our view, this should not be treated as a criminal matter. People often resort to harsh or offensive words when they are deeply distressed, frustrated with the system or overwhelmed by pain and helplessness.

The Prime Minister is a public servant entrusted with serving the people. If a young person, out of anger or disappointment, expresses themselves in an inappropriate way, the response should be guidance and understanding rather than criminal prosecution.

The Government of India should demonstrate magnanimity and compassion by counseling these students instead of pursuing punitive action.
