Medan man förstått att det ligger något i att man inte bidragit tillräckligt till Natos försvar, har man svårt att förlika sig med den fundamentala kritiken kring Europas utveckling. Vances exempel i talet i München för ett år sedan betraktas som mer eller mindre lösryckta anekdoter, snarare än som uttryck representativa för en totalitär tidsanda.

Man förefaller mer intresserat av ICE:s gripanden av illegala migranter i Minnesota än den brittiska polisens gripanden av vanliga medborgare som uttryckt provocerande saker online i Storbritannien. Framför allt tar man verkliga och föreställda oegentligheter i USA som intäkt för att USA är en illegitim bedömare av Europa.

För Europa framstår det svåraste vara att göra upp med bilden av sig själv.
