This month I also had the honor of taking part in a #DisabilityPrideMonth photoshoot for La De Da…i used to hide from my disability, now I take pride in it! #CerebralPalsyAwareness
Being proud of my disability is something I struggled with growing up, but once my mindset shifted, I discovered a new passion and my true calling!
Many thanks to Leanna Scachetti #WDBJ7 for including me in her story for #DisabilityPrideMonth! https://t.co/UiL7HDfK6H
Recently I was scootin’ with my pup around the neighborhood when we passed by a local restaurant and a kid knocked on the glass and started waving. I waved back but figured he was just admiring my pup (as many passerbys do.)
We talked about similarities and I gave him a few pointers to hopefully help him throughout elementary and beyond. His mom told me they were in town to see a specialist and unfamiliar with the area, but they were glad our paths crossed.
Can't remember the last time I hit the gym on a weekend. Watching that new @schwarzenegger Doc on @netflix must be paying off 😂 But seriously I woke up yesterday morning noticing my legs were more stiff than usual so I decided to do something about it #CerebralPalsyAwareness
…He was very appreciative and as we parted ways I thought maybe he was the reason I was destined to extend my vacation, even when my orginal reasons for doing so didnt work out! 😊
This past weekend I decided to extend my vacation one more day but soon after rebooking my room, my plans for the night unexpectedly fell through. So I decided to make the most of it and woke up the next day to watch the sunrise before heading home.
….English wasnt his first language, but he did well to ask many questions about everyday life, travel and storage. I hung onto every word and answered every question in detail. He then asks what I do for a living and I said, “Exactly this. I love helping people.”
…Ive been speaking publically and getting paid to do so for nearly 10 years, but this new endeavor has me taping into new parts of my personality and I love it! There’s a great correlation between disability advocacy and comedy and I’m glad to pursue them both now.
As promised, here’s a glimpse into what else I’ve been into for the past 6 months. First and foremost, I’ve always loved making people laugh and so I thought why not give stand up comedy a try. I started doing open mics back in December & had my first paid comedy gig last month
A quick beach trip always recharges my soul and I certainly didnt mind taking an advocacy call by the water this afternoon either. Will be sharing on Monday what else ive been up to since I dont post on here as much. Enjoy your weekend everyone!
Neighbor to me a wheelchair user: “I don’t see you as disabled. I see you.”
Telling a disabled person you do not see their disability is not a compliment.
Disability is not a wrong or a fault.
If you don’t see my disability or do not want to acknowledge it, you do not see me.
Looking forward to joining in on this wheelchair basketball tournament tomorrow at Roanoke College in support of my friends at Wheel Love & Toyslikeme. if youre around, come out in support or get in on the action!
