“#Overdo is the project where I cried the most. It felt like I was crying every single day.”

In the drama, Wang Churan plays Ren Susu, who carries the hatred of a family massacre from a young age. She goes through all kinds of hardships growing up, so her heaviness and quiet endurance shows without needing to be said.

“I’m actually not that much similar with her (in terms of personality). I’m more a straightforward person. Someone like her with that kind of background would feel really emotionally suffocated and tend to overthink everything, while for me, I’m the type who let things go once they’re done. I don’t hold onto stuff for long.”

Because of the large number of crying scenes, the emotional exhaustion sometimes made it difficult for her to pull herself out of the role. Since she couldn’t rely on mental methods alone to switch her emotions on and off, she would intentionally use physical actions instead. For example, she would keep taking deep breaths, using it to trigger muscle memory, activate her senses, and helping release emotions that feel stuck inside.

“When you can’t find the emotion, you have to let your body lead it out.”

And sometimes, emotions just come naturally. There’s no need for overly planned acting techniques, just simple expressions and body movements are enough to really move people.

Besides Ren Susu, Wang Churan also has another name in the drama, Fang Mulan, which is an identity Ren Susu temporarily takes on.

“That role was played by my good friend. In the scene where her character die, I didn’t build up to it at all. I cried so hard that even the crew around me started crying too.”

She realized that not only can the body drive emotions, sometimes emotions can also trigger physical reactions.

Talking about other character, she said, “When I get too immersed in acting, my own feelings start coming out unconsciously. Once, I cried so intensely that I completely broke down, and my whole body got covered in hives.”

For Wang Churan, the most important thing about being a “good actor” is making the audience feel something, something they can resonate and get drawn into. That has always been her acting goal.

For the roles she has truly put her heart into, she hopes people can come to see what’s going on inside them and grow to like them for who they are.

“Maybe every project has its regrets, but at least I feel I have no shame toward any of the characters I’ve played.”
