You can have an “all are welcome here” sign in your yard all you want.
But if you block new housing development, you are destroying the viability of “all are welcome here” politics.
How left-NIMBYs caused the housing crisis:
- don't build housing for the middle class, because that feels like helping the rich (ick!)
- middle class people turn to cheaper old housing, bidding up the price.
- poor people are priced out and have to move away.
Once again CEQA shows its true colors. It’s the law that swallowed California — a tool anyone with resources can use to obstruct any project they don’t like, no matter how beneficial.
CEQA needs to be re-tooled to focus on climate action & sustainability, not NIMBYism.
The rise in housing prices is Econ 101: we don’t have enough housing, & the shortage drives up costs.
The solution is equally simple: build more housing to drive down prices.
I wrote about how I’ll work with future president Kamala Harris to get it done: https://t.co/oltN30Rm70
The average NEPA impact statement takes 4.5 years to complete. That's ridiculous.
Here's a list of things that took less time to BUILD than it takes to complete a 575 page impact statement...
1. Golden Gate Bridge - 4 years, 4.5 months

YIMBYs have been taking victory laps this week on the back of some great speeches at the DNC. @open_phil has been the movement's biggest funder for most of the past decade, and I’m super proud of the progress. But we’re still very early in this fight: 1/

In an @nytimes OpEd author @just_shelter described the @CityofMillbrae hearings on a homeless project as having “the dark energy of a Donald Trump rally.”
11 mi down the 101, my City passed 3 similar projects, without drama. Here’s how Millbrae can too…
"There’s a serious housing shortage. It’s too difficult to build, & it’s driving prices up. We will take down barriers & cut red tape including at the state & local levels. We will end America's housing shortage by building 3,000,000 new homes."
Kamala just went full YIMBY!

On Friday I joined a Zoom call with the her and the other members of her finance committee. She was sharp, confident, and inspiring. She was also candid that, with 100 days to go, to win we will have to run an excellent but compressed campaign.
