You know what pisses me off about the people who are clutching their pearls over the idea that people want “permanent ruin” for the Cornell 7? There is absolutely no consideration for the FACT that this woman’s life has been permanently ruined through no fault or choice of her own. THEY chose their actions. I once saw an episode of Oprah (I know, I know, but this matters) where she interviewed men who were in prison for sex crimes. And something that one of them said has stuck in my head for this entire time since seeing it. He said that, in his opinion, he should’ve been charged with murder. Oprah was struck by that and asked him to elaborate. He explained that what he really did by committing this crime (if I remember correctly he molested a younger family member) was killed who the girl was supposed to be. Who she would’ve have been had these horrible things never happened to her. And he was right. This victim will never get over this. She will learn to cope with it. She will learn to manage the stress, anxiety, anger, fear. But she has been given a life sentence. They deserve the same.

Let's address your "provocation" claim. A routine maritime domain awareness flight to Pag-asa Island, over features inside the Philippine EEZ, is not a provocation. Firing flares at that aircraft is. Radio challenges asserting "indisputable sovereignty" over low-tide elevations are not law enforcement; they are an assertion of a claim that no tribunal has ever upheld.

On "sovereignty over Meiji Jiao and Zhubi Jiao": Mischief Reef and Subi Reef are low-tide elevations. Under UNCLOS, which China ratified, low-tide elevations are not capable of appropriation and generate no maritime zones of their own. Mischief Reef sits on the Philippine continental shelf. Building an airfield on a submerged reef does not turn it into territory. The Embassy cannot claim "adjacent waters" from a feature that has no waters to claim.

On the "waste paper": China's Foreign Ministry has now said this for ten years. In that same decade, the Award was reaffirmed as final and binding by the EU, by fourteen governments including Japan, Australia, Canada, the UK, Germany, and Italy, and by the Philippines. Beijing's answer was to lodge protests with all of them. That is not the behavior of a state that believes the Award is irrelevant; it is the behavior of a state that knows it cannot be answered on the merits. Repeating "null and void" a hundred times does not make Mischief Reef rise above high tide.

On "threatening the safety of Chinese personnel": our aircrew observed no personnel on the decks of the militia vessels in the lagoons and no movement on the reclaimed facilities. The only people whose safety was endangered on 7 September were Filipino aircrew on an unarmed plane.

The Philippines will keep flying to Pag-asa, keep documenting, and keep publishing. If the Embassy is confident in its legal position, it knows where the tribunal is.
