Humanitarian organisations including Oxfam and Doctors Without Borders (MSF) are slamming Israel’s decision to ban them from aiding Palestinians in Gaza, rejecting claims they enable terrorism.

Israel is set to ban 37 aid agencies from operating in Gaza after claiming, without evidence, that their staff may have links to militant groups.

Several branches of Oxfam and Médecins Sans Frontières are among those banned from 1 January after they refused Israel’s demand to supply it with a list of their employees’ names, which would breach data protection laws and endanger the workers.

The bans are designed, critics say, to further Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza and make it even harder for international groups to share information about atrocity crimes committed by Israeli forces.

Israel claims it needs the names of staff to “rule out any links to terrorism”.

The IDF has deliberately attacked aid agencies on multiple occasions, and has killed at least 508 aid workers in Gaza since October 2023, including 346 UN staff.

Human Rights Watch and others have noted that the military attacked locations and convoys after humanitarian groups shared their coordinates with Israeli authorities in the hope this would protect them from bombings.

“Israel has made Gaza the deadliest place for humanitarian workers on Earth, and not by a small margin,” Dr Feroze Sidhwa, a US surgeon who has volunteered in Gaza numerous times, told Drop Site News. “These people are targets when Israel knows who they are.”

He added that the pretext for the ban is “absurd” and that the real goal is to deny aid agencies “any ability to continue to talk about what is happening in Gaza”.

Israel has repeatedly violated a ceasefire agreement it signed with Hamas in October, both by bombing and shooting civilians on an almost daily basis and by continuing to severely restrict medicine, shelter and food, including baby formula, from entering Gaza.

Dr James Smith, an emergency physician who has volunteered in Gaza, told Al Jazeera the new bans will have a catastrophic impact. “A situation that is already horrific will be made even more horrific,” he said. “The changes will be immediate, and they will be ruthless.”
