So what if happiness isn’t free?
Then I will ask: what’s the fee?
If love and rest and meaning cost,
Then I will pay.I’ve paid for less.
But if it’s free, why do we beg?
Why do we bleed just to feel light?
Perhaps it’s free to all of us,
But kept by those who fight
If happiness is truly free,
Why does it leave when money goes?
Why does it hide behind new cars,
New names, new clothes, new friends?
Maybe it’s free, but staying isn’t.
Maybe we lease it by the day.
With kindness, with forgiveness,
With all the debts we will not say.
