Ronaldo and Modric were teammates at Real Madrid for six years. They won four Champions Leagues titles together. They celebrated in the same dressing room, travelled on the same team bus, and built a partnership that produced some of the finest club football of the last two decades.
Today in Toronto, Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modrić shared a pitch one final time. One of them had to go home.
It was Modrić.
Portugal beat Croatia 2-1 in a match that was tight, tense, and ultimately decided by moments rather than patterns. Croatia took the lead in the 53rd minute through Ivan Perišić, finishing sharply from Josip Stanišić's cross.
Portugal equalised in the 68th minute when Ronaldo converted a penalty awarded after a VAR review, his first ever World Cup knockout stage goal at 41 years old.
Then, in the 94th minute, Gonçalo Ramos headed in Rafael Leão's cross to put Portugal ahead. Croatia thought they had answered immediately when Joško Gvardiol converted, but VAR ruled it out for offside. The protests were furious. Objects were thrown onto the pitch. The whistle finally came.
Modrić is 40 years old. He plays for AC Milan in Serie A, one of the last of his generation still competing at the highest level of club football in Europe.
He played 229 minutes at this tournament, created five chances, contributed one assist, and led a Croatian nation of fewer than four million people as far as the round of 32 against one of the tournament favourites- having led them to the Semi final and final of the world cup in the last 8 years.
When he walked off that pitch in Toronto today, he had made over 150 appearances for Croatia, more than anyone else in their history. And one of the first things he did after the final whistle was embrace Ronaldo, the man who had just ended his World Cup journey.
Two generational players. One final handshake. But one had to go home.

Your club just paid up 100m 3 weeks ago to balance a 400m credit facility we used so we can open up another 250m credit facility
There’s still like 171m to be paid this summer for previous transfers but we should pay 130 for a single player when we obviously need like 5-6 player

I wish I had seen this earlier but it's never late.....
When some football handles create some things and tweet, I laugh. You have easily fallen for the dummy these handles created.
I will not dive into Sir Alex Ferguson vs Pep Guardiola. It's never an argument because Sir Alex Ferguson is not anybody's mate. He is easily the Greatest Manager of all time
Let me correct some wrong assertions.
Enzo Maresca is Pep's protege? FALSE
Let me do a breakdown of Enzo Maresca's coaching career
Enzo Maresca after retiring in 2017, quickly moved into coaching.
He was assistant manager at Serie B side, Ascoli in 2017 under Fulvio Fiorin.
He moved to become assistant Manager at Sevilla in 2017/2018 season under Vincenzo Montella
In the 2018/2019 season, Manuel Pellegrini personally requested Enzo Maresca to be his assistant coach at West Ham United in the 2018/2019
In case you don't know, the biggest impact on Maresca's career is Manuel Pellegrini. I will still get there, let me complete Maresca's coaching career cycle
After Pellegrini was sacked in 2019, Maresca left despite being offered West Ham's job. He declined their offer because of a particular reason.
In 2020, Manchester City hired him as the manager of the Elite Development Squad. After a season, he left and moved to Parma
In 2022, he returned as Pep's assistant coach. In 2023, he was appointed by Leicester City and the rest is history....
Do you think Maresca was playing with his life when he moved into coaching immediately in 2017 after retirement?
Let's get back to Pellegrini's influence on Maresca
Enzo Maresca and Manuel Pellegrini share a deeply close mentor-protégé relationship, often described by Maresca as a "footballing father" bond.
Their connection spans back to 2011 when Pellegrini signed Maresca as a player at Málaga and later hired him as his assistant coach at West Ham.
Pellegrini was the first person who convinced Maresca to pursue a career in coaching.
When Pellegrini was sacked in 2019 by West Ham United, Maresca had to leave despite West Ham offering him the job
He turned it down because, he can't take his mentor's job after he was sacked
Vincent Kompany
Kompany is Pep protege because he played under him? NO
Kompany played under Pep only for three years. Do you know how many managers Kompany played under before Pep - 14 managers.
Another name that sound familiar was part of this journey - Manuel Pellegrini
So, Kompany is not Pellegrini's protege but he is Pep's protege?
That is how they said Xabi Alonso is Pep's Protege because he played under him for two years
Every player that played under Pep suddenly becomes Pep's protege
You want to make Pep the alpha and omega of football.
And you mentioned Marcelo Bielsa having more influence on football than Sir Alex Ferguson
That statement is the biggest disrespect on Sir Alex
Who is Bielsa and what is his CV. He influenced some coaches you would say!
You will mention 20 great managers, Bielsa's name will not be among.
Sir Alex Ferguson is beyond influence.
Do you know what he turned Manchester United into?
