Jacinta and March and March are a symptom of a far deeper malaise in South Africa: 63% youth unemployment, a stagnant economy with barely a flicker of GDP growth, widespread and growing disenchantment with democracy and political processes, a political elite - utterly removed from the daily struggles of so many - who mostly couldn't give a damn as long as they get rich, the highest income inequality in the world, shattered dreams and a violent, broken and traumatised society. The list goes on and on and on. The rage and frustration that so many feel has coalesced around illegal migration and Afrophobic hatred scapegoating migrants for everything that is wrong in SA from crime, to joblessness to government failures. But just as hounding illegal migrants out of SA won't make a jot of difference to the lives of most South Africans, nor will a crackdown on Jacinta and her ilk. Unless the underlying inequities of our society are dealt with, the anger that gave rise to Jacinta and led to mob violence and looting in Gauteng and KZN this week will continue and new populist demagogues will arise and capitalise on that anger with glib promises and easy "solutions" that gloss over the complex and deeply rooted challenges we face as a country and society.

And this isn’t even about bashing Cape Town townships because we think we’re better blacks with better townships; but Capetonian township dwellers are really short changed man and those conditions are just not acceptable.
