As Brase warns, protecting your privacy increasingly means being willing to protect it yourself. Know what you’re consenting to and don’t be afraid to say no.

The USS Abraham Lincoln is finally heading home after nine months in the Middle East, and the first port stop — Thailand — did not come from a Pentagon briefing. It came from sailors’ texts and family pages. That story hit. Then the stern memos hit. Now they want every sailor, Marine, and family account locked down and scrubbed of any military tie.

CENTCOM commander Admiral Brad Cooper’s memo goes further: some troops in the Middle East may have to surrender their cell phones. They will tell you this is about Iran mining “pattern of life.” but the hostile actors they want offline is the press — and any sailor still able to text the truth home.

This blast went out after the Lincoln’s movement and the conditions on that boat started traveling through family feeds and reporters. Journalists were connecting names to a ship in an Iran fight. Sailors were talking. The answer was not fix the treatment. The answer was wipe the internet and confiscate the phones.

If the priority was dignity, you would treat the crew like human beings and let them tell their families where they are going after nine months at sea. Instead they are closing the only channel enlisted people have left. A memo that threatens to seize every sailor’s phone is not force protection. It is a gag. They would rather hide how those ships are being run than risk another leak. That should make you furious.
