That’s why many English players believe it’s the best league in the world. They’re accustomed to that kind of chaos.

“But football in Spain is different. Rayo sat deep and tried to make the game difficult, something you also see from many mid-table Premier League teams. The difference is that we didn’t simply resort to long balls or depend on set pieces. We moved the ball, Pedri found spaces between the lines, Lamine and the others created numerical advantages, and we patiently broke them down through our football.

“In England, sometimes the intensity can cover up mistakes. You can miscontrol the ball and still recover by winning the next physical battle. Here, a poor first touch or a lack of concentration in your positioning can immediately punish you. The spaces are smaller, decisions have to be quicker, and everything needs to be cleaner.

“My pace becomes even more effective here because the movement around me creates opportunities and space, rather than everyone simply running forward in straight lines.

“I loved playing in the Premier League and it played a huge part in developing me. But Spanish football demands a different level of tactical and technical intelligence. Some Premier League teams would struggle to play this style consistently because they may not have the patience or midfield quality required.

“That’s not disrespect it’s simply what I’ve noticed from my first few games. There’s a different kind of football intelligence here.”

Another proof that talent isn’t enough.

Youssoufa Moukoko was doing things at an age where most kids were still trying to make their way into top academies. He was the only 13 year old in the Under-17 Bundesliga for Dortmund. At 14, he moved up to the Under-19s and scored 6 goals in his first game.

In UEFA Youth League. At 14, he became the youngest player ever to play in the competition. A year later, just a day after turning 16, he made his Dortmund first-team debut and became the youngest player in Bundesliga history at the time. Went to UCL and also became the youngest player to feature then.

Everything about his early career screamed future superstar.

The goals, the physical ability, the hype, the records, Moukoko had almost every indicator you could ask for. People weren’t just calling him a talented youngster, they were talking about him as one of the next great strikers in world football.

And look at where he is now, on his way to Corum FK in Turkey.

Not trying to disrespect the club or saying Moukoko isn’t talented. Quite the opposite. His story is a reminder that talent can get you to the door, but it doesn’t guarantee what happens after you walk through it.

Football at the highest level demands so much more than being gifted. You need the right environment, coaching, mentality, consistency, physical development, decision-making, opportunity, and sometimes just plain luck.

Moukoko had the talent to make people dream for him. But football doesn’t reward potential. It rewards what you eventually become.

And that’s probably one of the harshest realities about becoming a professional footballer, the distance between being a special talent and becoming a special player is so big.
