This kantharos (drinking cup) was crafted around 350 BC in the Greek colonies of Magna Graecia, in what's now the Apulia region of Southern Italy. Material: Terracotta, red decoration applied over a black slip; height 11.4 cm.

The front of the kantharos features Cerberus, the three-headed guardian of the underworld. Depictions of Cerberus are actually incredibly rare in ancient art, which makes this cup highly valuable.

The Cerberus myth stems from a story of crime and redemption.

Driven mad by Hera, Heracles kills his own children in a fit of insanity. When he comes to his senses, he realizes what he's done and feels profound remorse. Seeking a way to cleanse himself, he consults the Oracle of Apollo at Delphi. The oracle commands him to serve Eurystheus, King of Mycenae, and to complete the labors assigned to him.

His twelfth and final labor is to bring Cerberus - the three-headed guardian of the underworld - to the surface. Hades allows him to take Cerberus on one condition: he must defeat the beast unarmed, relying solely on his own strength.
