"Socialism never took root in America because the poor see themselves not as an exploited proletariat but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires."
- John Steinbeck
Unlimited Arby’s Beef and Cheddars.
That’s what I enjoyed as a college student.
No, I didn’t work for Arby’s.
I just worked Arby’s.
There was one across the street from the Costco where I sold cell phones.
One day, I bought lunch and noticed a survey at the bottom of my receipt:
Free Arby’s Beef and Cheddar for your feedback.
I was a broke college kid, so naturally, I called and completed the survey.
The next day, I went back, ordered a Beef and Cheddar and an ice water, and handed over my receipt with the survey code.
The kid at the register rang up my free sandwich, then handed me a new receipt.
I found out later that they normally didn’t generate a receipt for a free sandwich. But because I ordered an ice water, they had to enter the transaction to track the cup in their inventory.
And at the bottom of that receipt?
The same offer for a free Beef and Cheddar.
So I filled out the survey.
Got another code.
Returned the next day for another free Beef and Cheddar and an ice water.
And received another receipt.
I did it again.
And again.
Dozens and dozens of times.
Did they notice?
Yes.
Did they care?
Also yes.
They freaking loved me.
Thanks to my daily five-star reviews, they became the number-one Arby’s in the region on the company’s internal customer-satisfaction rankings.
The manager shook my hand every time they saw me come in.
I had nicknames.
The Beef and Cheddar Guy.
Mr. Five Stars.
Water Boy.
Secret Sauce.
Sometimes they even gave me free fries and a drink to go with my free Beef and Cheddar.
I was a hero.
When I graduated and moved back to Washington with my wife, I left my unlimited supply of Beef and Cheddars behind.
I never said goodbye.
And I never redeemed my final receipt.

Property tax is just a tax on unrealized gains and I'm tired of pretending it's not.
You buy a house for $300k. Years later, market goes up, assessor says it's worth $600k now. Boom—your tax bill jumps, even though you haven't sold a damn thing, pulled equity, or seen a dime of cash from that "gain." You're paying every year on paper wealth that only exists on Zillow or some county spreadsheet.
We lose our minds when politicians float taxing unrealized stock gains for billionaires ("muh forced sales!"), but grandma gets hit with the same thing on her family home and we're supposed to call it "paying for schools and roads"? Nah.
It's a wealth tax dressed up as a service fee, and it only feels fair because we've normalized it for centuries. Once the mortgage is paid off, you should OWN it outright—no annual ransom to the county just because your neighborhood got trendy.
Abolish property taxes on primary residences. Tax consumption if you must, but stop pretending "ownership" means you rent from the government forever.

I wanted to share this letter I wrote to my family while Lindsey and I were making Buckingham Nicks. My mom saved it and it’s been in a drawer for over 50 years.

Carl Long was possessed by Hank Hill on the radio under the 10th caution of the race. "Damn it, Pepper!"
He then suggested putting Alamo Beer on the tires to make them stick better. Then he asked Joey Gase if he needed to come to pit road for Alamo Beer or Propane Accessories.
My 19 yo built his first structural arch today. Just a small bldg project behind the house but something he will see often as the years go by and reflect.
So I went to Costco without a membership, I snuck around the card readers, I didn’t want to wait in line to get an actual membership or one day pass. They caught me in the store and asked me to leave or go to the service desk and get a membership. Instead of leaving I demanded free products and food and waved a Sam’s club flag in the middle of their store to show them just how much I love Costco and want to stay. When they still asked me to leave I began stealing whatever I could and threw frozen hamburger patties at security. They should have just let me shop there without a membership, I’m special!
It is a strong core belief of mine that financial literacy is the only path to economic independence and well-being.
The more Americans that can be educated on this issue, the better.
@WarClandestine Russian goal was never about territory or to advance imperial dreams but to stop NATO-armed Ukraine from killing ethnic Donbass Russians: Between the 2014 coup in Kyiv & Russia's invasion on 24 Feb 2022, 14,000 lives had been lost. (“Responsibility to Protect” is a UN principle.)
