I met a delegation from Nonda Coffee Park led by Mr. Tonny Miiro Kibuuka, who briefed me on their plans to establish a coffee processing and value addition facility. I welcome this investment because it is exactly what we have always been advocating for.
Uganda should not continue exporting raw coffee. We must add value before export so that we create jobs, increase household incomes and earn more foreign exchange.
The government will support this initiative and mobilise our coffee farmers to produce more in preparation for the increased demand. I congratulate them and wish them good luck.

It is time we ask ourselves some honest questions. Are we preparing our children for the future, or for a world that no longer exists?

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭

The traditional “one-size-fits-all” school system is 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝. It was built for a different time and a different kind of economy. Today’s world demands something 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫, something 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞, and 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬.

We also need to take a 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐛𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐬. Many of them 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐧𝐨 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐚𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜 or 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 advantage. Still, many parents continue to spend large amounts of money on them, not because it is the best choice, but simply because it is what they have always known.

𝐀 𝐁𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐖𝐚𝐲 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝

Now picture a different approach. One that is 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐧, 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐟𝐮𝐥, and tailored to your 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝’𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 and 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞.

What if we focused on day schools that use technology well and that are rooted in the social and economic realities of their communities? The result would be education that feels more personal, more practical, and far more powerful.

𝐀 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬

𝐓𝐨 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭, current or future, this is not just about education policy. 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝’𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞. And your 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲’𝐬 𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐜𝐲.

Think about this: What if you chose a good day school instead of boarding school? And what if you took the money you would have spent on termly boarding fees and quietly invested it in 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐲 𝐁𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬, 𝐁𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐬, or 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐭 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐬 every year for 16 years?

By the time your child graduates, they could have a 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 stronger than any inheritance. Money they can use to start a business, fund further education, or simply explore life with confidence.

They might never need to look for a job. They could be the ones creating jobs.

HE, Ali Bajaber, of Yemeni ancestry, flew in from Morocco to meet @paceidug on the matter of opening a North Africa link for Uganda products. Mr Bajaber is as good a businessman as well as a Historian of the ancient South Arabian history of Yemeni civilisation.

Yemen, which had one of the earliest trading relations with India, Africa, and the Middle East, was settled by the Sabeans who ruled it 1200BC and produced the Queen of Sheba, the famous, beautiful queen who met King Solomon at the peak of the latter’s power about 970BC.

I had no idea that Yemenis received and converted to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, and over time, formed a cosmopolitan society in pre-modern times.

We have to be careful with history and study our societies to work with them better. We will be working with Ali in North Africa, reopening and reconnecting ancient trade routes that connected Malindi, Mombasa, and Zanzibar to Casablanca, Tunis, and Tripoli
