@hankgreen I do think the current swell is soon to end, but I am afraid it'll be more of a zit than a bubble and when it pops we have a whole lot of crap to wipe up
@maybe_ghuf What focus and memory do determine is how well you do up to high school, when education consists mostly of memorizing pre-written knowledge, but at some point you'll have to add to the pool and that's a different skill
@maybe_ghuf I've recently had an IQ test done (Neurodivergent so scores varied wildly between areas) and what I find they test more than aqcuity is focus and memory, which are definitly a large part of mental effectiveness but far from what determines how well you can apply it.
@yassifiedaloy I leave any designated site alone, but it's a personal custom to take any one rock that's smaller than my hand with me from any other country I visit, I am glad/do hope that didn't amount to having a handful of blood-rocks now.
@rlycrossedup It just goes against logic too, sure it may be that people haven't seen a thing before and they may not fully understand it, but if I imagine someone showed me something like a crystal pane that shows the past, I'd be very surprised, but I'd assess "wow this thing shows the past"
I think that'll always stay a problem when discussing experiences to the qualia level, the state of raw emotion is so much 'itself' that it's impossible to really pin down, but people try (and fail imo). Expressions can be discussed, but is-ness itself not so concretely.
This is sadly a widespread way to talk to patients with a variety of diagnoses (in Norway, where I’m located) and when looking closer it turns out that the «professionals» saying it have no idea what emotions are themselves.
@grace_hawthorn Oh it's fine, long time ago and they didn't know their stuff.
I think the slide shows some of the many approaches to empathy, and reasons why they may not be applicable in certain situations, but presented as wrong options.
In reality, it depends, there's no law.
When I was young I was taught that I couldn't be sad because 'people like me' don't have actual emotions. Trying to defend myself, I'd say I feel a weight in my chest, countered with "that's a physical sensation not an emotion" said I can't enjoy things "that's a state of mind"
@DegenerateBrent How I'm trying to look at it, if I want to be a little poetic about it, is that at the very least I've decided that the next person in line, however distant that is, deserves me fixed and cleaned up and, ultimately, so do I, so it's worth the work regardless of the results.
@DegenerateBrent Long as you catch yourself thinking things like "I wish I was with someone so they'd/so that I could-" you're, in my opinion, setting yourself and the other up to deplete each other for the resource you can't generate yourself until you have to part, spent.
@DegenerateBrent If I really dig at it, the reason I am single or at least the reason I should be, is because I'm currently battling severe self-esteem issues which would invariably lead to a relationship functioning as a self-worth generator rather than a partnership
Guess I also want to add to the Europe and AC discourse, but not so much on the AC's.
A few days ago I biked past the next town over and unlike here, that town had almost no trees in the street, most gardens paved and the difference was stark, shade mitigates a lot.
For clarity, point is not that I think the above are emotions, they're all things that being sad can cause you to feel, the point is more that all evidence will sometimes be strictly ignored to maintain the original point.
Said I have less energy and want to cry "that's a mood, not an emotion".
There's nothing to be gained when the other party is dead-set on denying your humanity, the condition will be further mystified until you relent, it boils down to "you're not worth considering"
@SweatieAngle The status quo is an open contempt for the citizenry that runs so deep they'll actually make expenses to ensure deeper suffering and dislocation, and so you can successfully run with "I'll turn the boiling drowning pool to room temperature"
@gemmabeepo Anything short of a global inquisition will be seen as oppression by them, it's like racists considering glancing past people who don't look immediately related to them to be an assault, a murder, a genocide even
@Pepipopa The math is crippling.
someone never meets me = I will never offend them
I flirt with someone = I potentially cause them an emotion worse than having your orifices shat full by a sick pig
2nd has a sub 1% chance of ending up positively, I end up alone, or alone and guilty.
