I know this is a joke. And while this sounds and looks good on paper, what Jay is describing is a bridge transfer, and Article 5bis of the FIFA Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players is unambiguous: no club or player shall be involved in a bridge transfer.

A bridge transfer is presumed to have occurred when two consecutive transfers of the same player, whether national or international, take place within a period of 16 weeks.

So in this scenario, buying Alvarez and selling him to Barcelona within that window does not just look suspicious. The presumption is automatic. The burden shifts to the parties to justify the sporting and economic logic of the arrangement. If you cannot, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee steps in.

Article 5bis was FIFA's response to clubs engineering consecutive transfers of the same player not for sporting reasons, but to dodge taxes, training compensation, and solidarity payments that a direct transfer would have triggered.

Before this rule existed, clubs had discovered that routing a player through an intermediary club could help them avoid or reduce those obligations on the final transfer. FIFA closed that door in March 2020 when Article 5bis entered into force.

A bridge transfer has happened a couple of times. The most recent I can remember was Atletico Madrid signing Demichelis from Malaga in July 2013 before selling him to Manchester City shortly after, happened in a regulatory era where this specific provision did not exist. That kind of arrangement is precisely what Article 5bis was designed to prevent from happening again.

The only way to do what you Jay here is describing legally is to genuinely buy the player, wait beyond the 16-week window, and then sell him if a buyer comes.
