Inspiring Paris Forum puts pumped storage on top of the agenda.
500 people from business, governments and civil society have come together in my old hometown of Paris 🇫🇷 for the largest global pumped storage forum ever. Former Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Premier of Sarawak Abang Openg led the opening.
Main takeaways from the exciting discussions:
* Pumped storage is an indispensable technology. We will see massive expansion of solar, wind and other renewables in the years to come. Battery technology will also develop fast. Pumped storage as battery is critical to the green energy mix.
* The industry is already here. The largest pumped storage plant (in China) is 3 gigawatt.
* Good government policies are critical for fast roll out as investors will only take the risk in a secure investment framework.
Exciting visit to worlds largest renewable battery! ☀️
Changlongshan pumped storage power station in Anji, Zhejiang is the biggest in China 🇨🇳 and the world. I led a delegation from International Hydropower Association (IHA). to see its beauty and efficiency. Its spectacular.
The capacity is 2,1 gigawatt and the plant is tuned in during peak hours when energy demand is high. An integrated system of solar and wind, with pumped storage when wind is not blowing or sun is not shining, is highly effective. Water is pumped up from lower to higher dam when surplus of energy and released at peak energy demand.
This is the future of renewables!
There are huge plans for many more pumped storage facilities in China , India 🇮🇳 and the world. International Hydropower Association will host a big conference in Paris next year.
💦Hydropower plays a key role in the #energytransition and provides electricity to millions of people, keeps grids stable and can be adapted to store energy.
Don't miss a spectacular video from the Almendra reservoir in Spain 👉A colosal spectacle at this emblem of #renewables .
#Hydropower is an indispensable part of Europe’s #energytransition & achieving #climateneutrality. Thanks to flexibility & large storage capacity, hydropower plants are key technologies complementing variable #renewables. Today, I visited @Statkraft’s 300MW hydroplant in Vinje.
We're celebrating Women in Sustainable Hydropower on #IWD2024 by launching a new space for women & sharing stories from women across the sector. ♀️

📝 Crazy.
China blew away every other country on hydropower in 2021.
New installed capacity was 20,840MW.
That's more than the rest of the top 10 combined.
Canada came a distant second.
