In 2011 Grass Hill Alpacas in Massachusetts accepted Bitcoin for wool socks at 75 BTC a pair after their son David suggested it. A February Slashdot post listed them as one of the first real goods buyable with BTC, sparking the “Do alpacas really wear socks?” meme. Lead developer Gavin Andresen bought pairs. The price later fell to 5 BTC. The alpaca became Bitcoin’s unofficial mascot, with jokes, a song, and the slogan “alpaca-sock-wearing crypto-terrorists.”
