“Coding” was never the source of value, and people shouldn’t get overly attached to it. Problem solving is the core skill. The discipline and precision demanded by traditional programming will remain valuable transferable attributes, but they won’t be a barrier to entry.
Many times over the years I have thought about a great programmer I knew that loved assembly language to the point of not wanting to move to C. I have to fight some similar feelings of my own around using existing massive codebases and inefficient languages, but I push through.
I had somewhat resigned myself to the fact that I might be missing out on the “final abstraction”, where you realize that managing people is more powerful than any personal tool. I just don’t like it, and I can live with the limitations that puts on me.
I suspect that I will enjoy managing AIs more, even if they wind up being better programmers than I am.
The reason why I'm so bothered by this stuff is because it's a pernicious idea. Too many people read a person's more important inner qualities—intelligence, capability, morality, character, and, in this case, dignity—based on their attire. Often, they assume that someone who conforms to middle- or upper-class aesthetics is more virtuous.
This idea affects who gets employment and housing, how they're treated by authorities, whether they're allowed to be in public spaces, etc. This is bad! As society becomes increasingly diverse, we should recognize there's a difference between "common culture" and "common society." We all live in society, but we may not share the same culture. This does not mean that people who dress differently from you are less capable, moral, intelligent, or dignified.
Jamaican-born British cultural theorist Stuart Hall wrote this in the 1990s:
“It should not be necessary to look, walk, feel, think, speak exactly like a paid-up member of the buttoned-up, stiff-upper-lipped, fully corseted and free-born Englishman, culturally to be accorded either the informal courtesy and respect of civil social intercourse or the rights of entitlement and citizenship. [...] Since cultural diversity is, increasingly, the fate of the modern world, and ethnic absolutism is a regressive feature of late-modernity, the greatest danger now arises from forms of national and cultural identity—new or old—which attempt to secure their identity by adopting closed versions of culture or community and by refusing to engage with the difficult problems that arise from trying to live with difference. The capacity to live with difference is, in my view, the coming question of the twenty-first century.”
I hope that my account here, in some ways, shows that some people who insist on the most rigid forms of dress do not actually adhere to their own norms. Many do not, in fact, dress very traditionally themselves. And even if they do, they fail to recognize that the standards they set for others were once considered improper for an older generation.
If someone is in front of you, you can judge their inner qualities directly through their actions. You don't have to use their attire as a proxy.
