Transubstantiation is nothing more than a Latin term explaining that bread and wine, become, in the context of a valid eucharist, His body and blood. There are few things in the Christian faith more biblically based. Christ is, parenthetically, "word made flesh." If John 6 :53-58 is only metaphoric, why did Jesus repeat himself three, four or five times? And how can you say he was not speaking prophetically of the eucharist when there is an implicit contrast with the consumption of a sacrificial lamb at the Passover meal? To consume the body and blood of Christ is to participate in an eschatological meal, to seal a covenant (per Calvin and the Fathers) that makes present the Paschal Mystery.

Some of the Ninety-Five (more than a few) are entirely reasonable critiques of challenges or abuses. The problem is that "justification by faith" and the Reformed view of grace becomes a doctrine that renders the Church's - and Christ's - sacramental theology unrecognizable.

My understanding, from a rather ancient biography, is that John Vianney never finished the seminary. He had difficulty with Latin, in no small part due to the fact that he was raised during a time of sustained civil war and war. If I am not mistaken, Vianney was interveiwed by the vicar general, who asked him if he had a devotion to the Mother of Our Lord. Vianney, responded, "of course I do," and he was ordained not in the cathedral but in a small ceremony with the senior clergy of the diocese. He was, ironically, treated as if he were something of an embarrassment to the presbyterate. The Lord had other plans.
